The 2009 Rafto Prize for Human Rights is awarded to Malahat Nasibova (40) from Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, Azerbaijan. Despite the risk to her
own safety, Malahat Nasibova reports on abuse of power, human rights violations
and corruption in the isolated autonomous republic of Nakhchivan.
Two bloggers arrested - Nasibova's statement Two bloggers and youth activists were arrested on 11 November in Baku, Azerbaijan. Read Malahat Nasibova's statement on the issue. Jounalist who won't be silenced Malahat Nasibova is a correspondent for Turan, an independent information bureau in Azerbaijan, and for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. She is the leader of the human rights organisation Democracy and NGO's Development Resource Center in Nakhchivan. Nasibova has been a critical voice against the authorities for ten years and she steadfastly refuses to give up the fight for freedom of speech. She reports on violations by the police against ordinary citizens, kidnapping of members of the opposition, and attacks on journalists. In the absence of other independent institutions, Nasibova has become a kind of ombudsperson whom the local population turn to in order to be heard. Interview with the 2009 Rafto Prize Laureate The interview with the 2009 Rafto Prize Laureate, in the video above, was produced by Astrid Tomassen from communication agency Nor PR and design and communication company Maritime Colours. Rafto-Maritime Colours cooperation The Rafto Foundation would like to thank Maritime Colours for their cooperation in connection with the 2009 Rafto Prize. Maritime Colours has developed the Rafto Foundation's new visual identity and profile, which was implemented in 2009. The profile is based on the Foundation's core values: courage, integrity, consideration and openness. The visual identity and profile builds on Rafto's logo: R for Rafto, R for Rights. The handprint represents individuality. The R-symbol will be used as a gateway and direct attention to individual cases. Maritime Colours has designed a new logo, font and color code, a new and updated website for Rafto, printed merchandise, and presentation and press release templates. |
